Toothbrush Facts

There is a lot to know about your handy toothbrush. And, the more you know, the better! Our dentist, Dr. Ali Nia, is happy to teach you all about your oral hygiene tool so you can properly and effectively use it each day. Some facts about toothbrushes include:

-It’s recommended to use a toothbrush that has soft bristles. This is because it can thoroughly clean the teeth as well as care for the gums.

-The first toothbrushes made had bristles that were hairs from animals, like hogs and horses.

-You shouldn’t share your toothbrush with anyone—not even a family member. This is because swapping saliva, oral bacteria, and even blood from the gums can promote dental and health issues.

-It’s strongly encouraged to brush twice a day for two minutes each time.

-Both electric and manual toothbrushes can effectively clean and care for your smile. So, when choosing between the two tools, your preference is all that matters.

-The toothbrush was selected as the No. 1 invention Americans could not live without in 2003.

-The electric toothbrush was invented in Switzerland in 1954.

-Back in the day, toothbrushes that had pig bristles were cheaper than toothbrushes that had badger hair. In fact, badger-hair toothbrushes could get quite expensive.
